The Metaverse is the digital representation of the world that users inhabit and interact with. It is a virtual reality that can be accessed by anyone in the world. With the development of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), it is not an exaggeration to say that we are on the brink of a new era. But, why is the metaverse so important?
The importance of the metaverse stems from its ability to provide a shared environment and economy for all people, regardless of their location. The metaverse allows users to buy, sell, and trade products and services, as well as provides creators and companies with an additional source of income.
Why is the Metaverse so important?
The Metaverse is not a single system but a collection of interconnected systems, each with its own rules and capabilities. It is made up of interconnected worlds that are not limited by geographical boundaries, meaning that technically everyone with an internet connection and the right setup can have access to it.
The Metaverse is the next evolution of the internet and is changing how we live, work, and play forever.
Moreover, the metaverse is important because it allows people to interact with others that they may never have had the chance to, in a setting, they may not be able to visit. For example, if you work remotely from home in California, but your employer’s office is located in New York, you can use the metaverse to sit in the same office, in a shared virtual space.
The metaverse also allows for a more immersive experience in entertainment, education, and other forms of content all through virtual reality. The virtual environment enables people to communicate with others, share ideas, and create content easily. You can also use the metaverse to collaborate on projects with others in the real world, even if you are in different parts of the world.
What is the potential of the metaverse?
The future of the Metaverse is a topic that has been discussed for years, and many people have different opinions about it. Some believe that it will never fully exist, while others believe that it will replace real life.
The future of the metaverse is already in development, and leaders like Mark Zuckerberg mention that the metaverse will reshape our lives by allowing us to go online anywhere, move fast, build awesome things, and live in the future. Furthermore, the metaverse is a potential $30 trillion industry.
The metaverse is a virtual world that has been imagined by science fiction writers for decades. The potential of a virtual world is literally limitless because it does not have any boundaries to what can be created. Being in the metaverse means people will be able to travel to infinite worlds without ever leaving their homes.
The idea of a metaverse is not new, it has been around for over 50 years. The first mention of it was in 1962 by computer scientist Jaron Lanier who said “the ultimate form of entertainment will be a three-dimensional interactive environment.”
In Snow Crash, Stephenson predicts the Metaverse to be an immersive virtual reality environment. He goes on to describe it as being made up of thousands of public domains which are grouped into six levels of access rights. The Metaverse will be able to do anything that the internet can do, but it will be represented as a 3D virtual reality experience.
What can you do in the Metaverse?
The Metaverse is a digital space that is essentially available to everyone. This opens the doors for many opportunities across numerous industries. So, what can you do in the metaverse?
Mark Zuckerberg has mentioned things you are able to do in the metaverse in his video introduction to Meta. He speaks on the following subjects:
1. Communicate better
In the metaverse, 3D avatars will be the primary means through which we communicate and engage with one another. Indeed, Mark predicts that avatars will become as prevalent as profile pics.
Depending on what you’re doing, you’ll have different avatars. You’ll have one for work and another for socializing, for example, and they’ll all be produced by various people. In the metaverse, many tangible objects, like screens, will be holograms.
2. Entertain easier
The Metaverse has the power to affect communities in many ways. For instance, it can be used by people who are unable to attend events in person because they are too far away, or by people who have disabilities.
Additionally, the metaverse is full of tools for building that creators can use to create in a virtual space, and even place digital objects into the real world, allowing others to interact with them. These 3D assets will be able to adapt and react in a realistic manner, with a genuine sense of depth and inclusion.
The effect of the Metaverse on entertainment will be very vast and diverse and will also change how we experience live events such as concerts and sporting events by allowing us to see them from different angles and in real-time.
Furthermore, the metaverse will enable creators to link various real places into integrated AR narrative experiences such as guided tours and scavenger hunts.
However, there are also concerns that this virtual world could have a negative effect on communities because it may cause isolation from reality or cause people to stop interacting with others in the physical world.
3. Exercise comfortably
Many of us already utilize VR technologies like Oculus to get in our regular exercises. VR enables you to workout in whole new ways. You may exercise in several settings and even compete with artificial intelligence.
You can also link up with your friends for a team experience. Fitness in the metaverse allows you to experience a fully immersive and comprehensive exercise anywhere in the globe, all from the comfort of your own home.
4. Run a business from anywhere
Consider how much time you could save if you didn’t have to drive to work every day. VR technology allows you to maintain a sense of presence and shared physical space. Furthermore, you may have your full work setup in the palm of your hands without the use of a computer.
You can even block out the noise and go to a pleasant location, such as the beach, to get more work done. When you’re done, simply teleport back to your office for your briefing. All of this means less time stuck in traffic, fewer flights to meetings, and more opportunities for everyday encounters and networking.
This makes the workplace more comfortable for employees and increases productivity. It can also help with employee training by providing authentic simulations of certain situations that employees may face while on the job, eventually enhancing global productivity and efficiency.
5. Educate like never before
Thanks to the convenience that the metaverse enables its users, as well as its virtual foundation, the metaverse allows teachers to teach in a completely new and innovative way and allows students to learn from anywhere in the world.
In the metaverse, you will not only be able to teleport to any location, but also to any time. Imagine being able to teleport to Ancient Rome and hearing the noises of the streets, seeing the marketplaces, and experiencing life over 2000 years ago. Because of the metaverse, this is now conceivable.
Or, say you’re a medical student who’s learning a procedure. With the help of virtual reality, you may now learn new methods and surgeries firsthand until you get it right, in a virtual environment with your teacher right at your side.
6. Explore new opportunities for commerce
Commerce will play a huge role in the metaverse and it will likely happen sooner than most of us expect it.
In the next decade, Meta hopes to help the metaverse reach over a billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars in digital commerce, and provide jobs for millions of creators and developers.
Meta is entirely dedicated to this aim, according to Mark Zuckerberg. It is the next chapter in their brand’s history, and they believe in the internet as a whole; their track record demonstrates that they will continue to build the community, the creator economy, and the developer ecosystem in the future.
Will the metaverse replace the Internet?
Although I will admit that the future of the metaverse seems very promising, I know others are wondering if it will replace the internet one day.
The metaverse won’t replace the internet, it’s technically a new version of the internet. The metaverse is built on web3, which includes things like semantic web, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality, which are all built on a decentralized public ledger called the blockchain.
The internet is an interconnected network of servers that use various protocols to link together globally, whereas the metaverse is a collective virtual shared space built on a decentralized ledger, meaning that it can’t be shut down by any one person or organization.
While both are similar in the sense that they allow people to connect with one another over long distances, there are some distinct differences between them. That is why the metaverse is described as a platform created by a convergence of virtual reality technology and the internet, not one or the other.
Will the metaverse become mainstream?
It has been predicted that the first Metaverse will be in full swing by 2025. The Metaverse has been predicted to become mainstream anytime between 2030 to 2040. There are many reasons why it might take a few years longer for this to happen, but there are also reasons why it might happen sooner than expected.
The metaverse has already made it mainstream in some cases, having headlined many reputable publications. In 2020 alone, there were more than 57 million VR users in the US. VR headsets are now being used for many purposes including entertainment, business, education, and more, with the metaverse as the foundation.
One example of VR headsets being used for optimizing a business comes from a farmer in Turkey. İzzet Koçak simulates green pastures on VR headsets to reduce his cows’ stress in an attempt to increase milk production.
Koçak told Turkish news outlet Anadolu Ajansi, “We get an average of 22 liters of milk per day from the cows in our farm,” Koçak said in the video, “The milk average of the two cows that wore virtual reality glasses was up to 27 liters.”
The virtual world is becoming an increasingly popular place to live due to its flexibility, opportunity, and convenience. More than 30% of Americans are already constantly online, so it should come as no surprise that a virtual world is a future we are creating for ourselves.
Could the metaverse fail?
The metaverse has been the subject of many debates and discussions since its inception. People are wondering if it could fail because of the lack of user adoption or poor execution on the part of developers. Here’s my take.
It’s unlikely that the metaverse will fail in the macro as most people already consume digital content on a daily basis, and backers like Mark Zuckerberg are already dumping billions of dollars into the infrastructure of the metaverse. However, certain branches of the metaverse may ultimately fail.
I think that the worst-case scenario of the metaverse failing is that humans choose to use it as an escape from reality, neglecting our real lives, and ignoring physical interactions, opting instead for digital lives.
Or, that people choose to use the metaverse for bad instead of good.
Have we not made this choice already though? Ultimately, it’s the people who choose to use technology for bad, and not the technology itself that is bad.
