If you don\u2019t know how to do this, you lose all access to your wallet and the assets in it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having recovered my wallet a number of times over the years, I\u2019ve learned the exact steps you need to take to restore your MetaMask wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you will learn how to unlock your MetaMask wallet under the following circumstances:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You forgot your password.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can\u2019t unlock MetaMask with your password.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You uninstalled the extension or app.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The extension or app updated and kicked you out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Recover MetaMask Using Your Seed Phrase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. You must enter the seed phrase you received upon originally creating your wallet in the exact order that it was revealed to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Create a new password to recover your wallet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/MEwUAERN1lUdDk77nAcjbPb9-Vmc4zQLgI7s9mv6mrAXIPi6Pv0jYYD2ubJIOw3-DelrLpTHLAe9PLEl4LaqT2SIY7vvzZjpAZWu0YBV_mQ69jLBc9snOq3FpPEh8RD5b9HP0CJDmgBeFRXLin3twx97Htr6_KyOFT7J665FrQeim9jUERTc2ytMn_es_Q\" alt=\"Import from seed screen.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of whether you lost your password or not, you\u2019ll have to create a new password. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I always recommend creating a brand new password that you\u2019ve never used before using upper and lowercase characters, numbers, and symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you\u2019ve successfully entered your seed phrase and your passwords match, the restore button will be enabled, allowing you to recover your wallet and everything within.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, if you had multiple accounts in your MetaMask wallet they will all be restored as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you see tokens missing such as your crypto or NFTs, then you might have to <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/import-nfts-into-metamask\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/import-nfts-into-metamask\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manually import them<\/a> back into your wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do I See My MetaMask Secret Phrase?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve lost your secret recovery phrase but still have access to your wallet, you can reveal your secret phrase again so that you can record it and store it in a safe place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/Jonn7JUIqEF3BuhwOZ1UXyljZARqnkKHfd9QfSu1V1z8zd4rB75wiQrdRxyu8ZahvdtoR3veLUgppmcLFfYTV3vgbbKSbSI5TbQXT3wAHsRGW6ZgZqYLf8TsThCRo942UbByWop1TN1jLkzZreSCOXxRjB9KV_kzwG0-T7-d6HJfSzKXFI3jIJqexoEu7g\" alt=\"Three steps to reveal your secret phrase in MetaMask.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To reveal your secret phrase in MetaMask follow these steps below:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In MetaMask, go to the \u201cAccounts\u201d tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap the \u201cSettings\u201d icon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose Security and privacy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap \u201cReveal Secret Recovery Phrase\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter your password to reveal your secret phrase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Record your phrase and store it in a safe place.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find yourself having to reveal your secret recovery phrase, it\u2019s important to write it down and store it in a safe place so that you don\u2019t have to keep revealing it using your wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because, <strong>if you lose access to your wallet you won\u2019t be able to reveal your phrase again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you completely sign out of your MetaMask wallet or you forget your password and you don\u2019t know your secret phrase, there\u2019s no way to see your seed phrase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence you lose all access to your wallet, and there\u2019s nothing anyone could do to help you\u2014and that includes MetaMask support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I Recover My MetaMask Wallet Without a Seed Phrase?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t recover your MetaMask wallet without the seed phrase. However, if you remember the password for your account you might be able to recover your phrase using the vault extraction method. This method uses a web inspector in conjunction with MetaMask\u2019s Vault Decryptor to reveal your phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably, this is not the most simple method so make sure you have roughly 30 minutes set aside to try this out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, you must use the same browser on which your MetaMask wallet was installed for this to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are trying to recover the seed phrase that was on your mobile iOS device, you can skip ahead to that section. Currently, this method does not work on Android devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vault Extraction Method (Chrome, Brave, Edger, and Opera)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Right Click on the MetaMask Extension window<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/rCecHp6Wrm5IRoaVnSls-Laih0IpQVRgDDzI6jOWGIX7EW7ziCGIebmcX0TVBu4u52Ry251ec8oXHIpSusP47FsR30X687p6iBghUJlA5ezi6vtV5jrC9OW0BhK6whNueNpsdYOFxMZbJ0NiH4dYoK93HzSs1vlAUIr4SPgbfP_JLnUMRqEA4FCsUjG1pQ\" alt=\"Using the Inspect button on the MetaMask Chrome extension.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This will pop up the \u201cInspect\u201d button. Click this button to open DevTools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you had MetaMask installed on Firefox, you may need to have the MetaMask extension opened in &#8216;Expanded View&#8217; to open the &#8216;Inspect Element&#8217; or Web Inspector.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Go to the Console tab and paste the command<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/EBf-qd3lPEaXdwP9lre_rPwwfvCbMS41r5-wlifn3Yk3Y6GAIcAbHck2nQ9Uiw3-FkYwJhm63aTmbru--XSCxYu2flC_orOK3rMGwYRYTbO_Jdsn9MSz029DQekxS2LZqrbJ5JJOpgX4dXOjsQxOf3OL7qfePvOb43cDs_J1YyxqAtj41OuNSwoLIo7e2Q\" alt=\"The console tab in the DevTools.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In DevTools, tap the \u201cConsole\u201d tab and paste the following into the blank space shown in the picture above:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>chrome.storage.local.get(&#8216;data&#8217;, result =&gt; {&nbsp;<\/strong><br><strong>var vault = result.data.KeyringController.vault&nbsp;<\/strong><br><strong>console.log(vault)&nbsp;<\/strong><br><strong>})<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once pasted, hit enter to reveal a result that begins with &#8221; <strong>{&#8220;data&#8221;: &#8220;<\/strong>. This is the vault data that you will use to decrypt your seed phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/NmvKT3o9JO9RMv7FVRllAQimUK3upvntqOJ_oq6VHu0hrFr4SzKvEkqtsQ_elSrK8ZxPDYsxtkCk6WTll49MHU1iK9BNntmx-atydTz3KjAyigGI_0ICp0Pc8YJTNtPj2lfuJ-mDc7xlNyusEn50QssBf1X115taaze6xyV27t169twmnv_CytuFcTEU6w\" alt=\"Data that must be copied from the DevTool.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll want to copy this string of data to your clipboard. Make sure to leave out the underlined part that says \u201c<strong>sentry-install.js:1\u201d<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you copy the data, it should leave this out automatically. If it doesn\u2019t, manually highlight the text starting from the bottom to the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Paste the data into the MetaMask Vault Decryptor to reveal your phrase<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/3J9xPmgsCLadK2mqN0O7ziiuIXz5sym0rW2T1_ij1ousNaTIgKt5gDuNj3W99EeXRjrIORlb-hK651tARMep_dPIhlm75bMsujinsldK8_U27dwLcRszy1E-zaNji9jiDa44nWhef5dNr5yE-LL66etviprMBMu_EfgdBwuf6gkSJ-np8VI0kOKgE13QuA\" alt=\"MetaMask Vault Decryptor.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After copying the vault data go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/metamask.github.io\/vault-decryptor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MetaMask Vault Decryptor<\/a> and paste the data into the decryptor. Next, you\u2019ll need to enter your password before tapping \u201cDecrypt\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If successful, your secret phrase will be revealed and you can use it to restore your MetaMask wallet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vault Extraction Method (iOS Mobile Device)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you had MetaMask installed on your mobile iOS device you can still use the Vault Extraction Method, however, the instructions are different. Additionally, you\u2019ll need a few things before getting started:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>iCloud backup had to be enabled in your iCloud settings while the app was being used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The password that was used on MetaMask Mobile when the vault was created (or restored on that device).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MacOS running on a separate computer other than the mobile device in question.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An app capable of displaying JSON data in a readable fashion. If you don\u2019t have one, MetaMask recommends using: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/imazing.com\/download\/macos\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/imazing.com\/download\/macos<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A WiFi connection or the appropriate cable to sync your phone and your computer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have everything listed above, follow the steps below to reveal your seed phrase on iOS using the Vault Extraction method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Connect your device to a computer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can connect your iOS using wifi or a physical cable. The goal is to get your device to appear in your Finder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Search for \u201cKeyringController\u201d<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Using your Finder, search for \u201c<strong>KeyringController<\/strong>\u201d then copy and paste the JSON object into a new document. It will look similar to what you see below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-KeyringController-1024x261.png\" alt=\"MetaMask KeyrinController\" class=\"wp-image-7364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-KeyringController-1024x261.png 1024w, https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-KeyringController-300x76.png 300w, https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-KeyringController-768x196.png 768w, https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-KeyringController.png 1310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Backup your iOS device using your Mac<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Back up your device using the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/iphone\/back-up-iphone-iph3ecf67d29\/ios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instructions on Apple\u2019s website<\/a>. Before viewing the instructions be sure to choose the correct version of iOS that\u2019s running on your mobile device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s best to use the encrypted option when backing up your device. Also, make sure to record the password, you\u2019ll need it later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Select \u201cManage Backups\u201d<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Once selected, choose \u201cShow in Folder\u201d and drag the backup folder into whichever app you\u2019re using to convert JSON data into a human-readable form such as the iMazing app I recommended above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you encrypted the backup you will need to enter your password at this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Go to Apps, MetaMask, Documents, persistStore, persist-root<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the backup tool, go to Apps, MetaMask, Documents, persistStore, persist-root, and then open the persist-root file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modify the object to reflect the example below (<strong>make sure to manually remove all \\\\\\ and ensure there are no white spaces<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"211\" src=\"https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-JSON-KeyringController-1024x211.png\" alt=\"MetaMask JSON KeyringController\" class=\"wp-image-7365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-JSON-KeyringController-1024x211.png 1024w, https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-JSON-KeyringController-300x62.png 300w, https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-JSON-KeyringController-768x159.png 768w, https:\/\/cyberscrilla.com\/staging\/4768\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MetaMask-JSON-KeyringController.png 1298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 6: Copy the vault payload into your mobile app<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Open the MetaMask app on your iPhone and go to the Wallet Setup screen. Choose \u201cImport using Secret Recovery Phrase\u201d. Next, you want to paste the vault data into the Secret Recovery Phrase field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then enter the password that was used when you originally set up the wallet you\u2019re trying to recover.
